It’s a great camera. I just sold mine and switched to mirrorless. I am really loving the smaller size so far.

If you start investing in lenses, I’d highly recommend buying used from KEH.com. I got two very good condition L-lenses off of there for killer deals.

Man, I haven’t followed new DSLR releases in a long time. I use a Fuji X20 right now since it’s versatile and compact.

You’re gonna have a lot of fun with this - I love taking photos in general and it’s so much fun to practice. I made the mistake of wanting too much equipment too fast, but looking back at my photos most of my favourite and best photos were taken with the 18-55mm lens in the kit. I know I still have that D40 around somewhere...

Now get a couple cheap and good prime lenses.

There aren’t really any cheap proper wide angles for Canon crop-sensor SLRs but you can get the Canon 50/1.8 STM for cheap, and also the Yonguo 50/1.8 and 35/2 which are supposedly knockoffs of older Canon lens designs whose patents have expired.

The closest to a cheap wide angle prime is this old Tokina AT-X 17/3.5 that came in a couple versions. The original can be had on ebay for about $200-250 and the later “Pro” version is more like $350.
